If you are a total couch - or mouse - potato, the Get Active program will get you moving.

Each week for 12 weeks, you will receive an email guiding you through a step to becoming more active. Don't worry, you don't have to belong to a gym for it to work for you!

The program restarts at the beginning of each quarter (July, October, January, and April). To sign-up for the Get Active program, click here. You will get your first email soon after the first of October.

Physical Activity is a Family Affair

Being physically active doesn’t have to take you away from your family. There are plenty of activities that you can enjoy with your spouse and/or children.

Instead of doing sedentary recreational events (video games, movie), plan something more active. Remember to adapt your activities to suit those at different abilities and developmental stages. Get up and...

  • Go bowling
  • Plant a garden
  • Shovel snow. Throw a few snowballs while you’re at it!
  • Visit an amusement park or zoofamily affair
  • Walk the dog or your neighbor’s dog or a pound dog
  • Go to a museum
  • Go roller skating
  • Go ice skating
  • Go inline skating
  • Rent a canoe
  • Go for a swim
  • Rent bikes
  • Take a hike
  • Go camping
  • Walk to school
  • Pedal a paddleboat
  • Go square dancing
  • Participate in the short family walks or runs that are held before organized charity walks or road races
  • Keep a pair of walking shoes in the trunk of your car. You may be able to walk while waiting to drive children home from their activities.
  • Wash the car by hand.
  • Rake leaves
  • Do a scavenger hunt in your yard/neighborhood
  • Jump rope
  • Play basketball, soccer, baseball, volleyball...any ball!
  • Play Frisbee
  • See who can hula hoop the longest
  • Play tag
  • Create a family dance routine
  • Do martial arts

Post this list on the refrigerator. Ask each family member to pick one they would like the family to do together this week. Give it a try! Pick new activities (or add your own) for next week.
